Last Tuesday, IIIC staff joined our partner, Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), and other member organizations, to meet with lawmakers at the State House. We fully support the new Safe Driving Bill that is being proposed which allows driver’s license eligibility for all residents of Massachusetts regardless of their immigration status. The meeting was organized by MIRA to address questions from lawmakers and to demonstrate constituent support.
Working with Sen. Patricia Jehlen of Somerville and Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier of Pittsfield, MIRA introduced the Safe Driving Bill to address some issues about unlicensed immigrants’ need to drive children to school and relatives to hospitals. The hope is to change Massachusetts law, which currently requires immigrants seeking a driver’s license to prove that they are in the country legally, and instead to ensure that drivers on state roads are trained, licensed and insured.
IIIC will continue to support this effort and collaborate with MIRA to push this bill forward. For updates or more information on the Safe Driving Bill, visit www.miracoalition.org.
